Pabby's Score turned into a 452 page paperback book which seemed to me quite lengthy for a golf novel. Started reading it and it did not start out well with an online visit between a man and woman in a sexy hookup. The story did get started and it was about the owner and operator of this Prairie Winds Golf Course and the local groupies who played golf and hung out at the golf course. These characters were typical of many small town golf courses so I could relate to that.

The characters in this book were well described but the added difference when the local children's need institution brought an autistic boy and girl with their attendants to the golf course every day. They became part of the story throughout the book. I became well engrossed with the story and it moved along with many different situations that arose each day. The autistic boy named Paddy had unusual talents and was good out mathematical problems.

My problem was when this telephone sexy situation kept popping up and many times I just skipped over them. The author had so many situations and stories within this book from Pabby being able to pick out the winners in horse races. There was a race track in town and the group took Pabby too many races. This also became involved in other situation which included a secret society.

The book did come together and even the explanation of the telephone sexual encounters where brought to light. The reason for the overturned golf cart on the cover was also another story in this book as the golf course gets sued with an attempt to take over the golf course. I did stay focused and it all comes together towards the end but it was not a typical small town golf course with some strange people and strange events.

James Ross developed his love of golf when his parents moved to a golf course in St. Louis. At age 50 he decided to get in touch with his creative side and began to write. He said the words just flowed which has produced this fifth book Pabby's Score in 2011. I am not a big fiction reader but look more into non-fiction or real life events. I will admit that I have never read a book like this before. I was initially drawn to the book because it features two kids with autism. But it is so much more than that! This book tackles corruption, secret societies, murder, and much more. It is really a quick read (even though it is over 400 pages). The chapters are short and manageable, and the story is fairly easy to follow.

For me, Pabby and Shae are the bright spots in this book. I enjoyed reading about them and all the disabled kids at their home. I found them charming, and I loved the fact that they would share their vast knowledge any time they wanted to. I love the fact that they were so trusting and uninhibited. I was cheering for Pabby when things were really going well for him.

I was horrified to read about lawyer corruption and the secret society. I will not put spoilers here, but don't think that the last 100 pages will be a pleasant read. I couldn't put the book down during that last 100 pages. It was the most intriguing part of the book for me!

There is profanity throughout the book (but not as much as I thought there might be), but I was more offended by all the sex in the book. Thankfully details were limited, but I read enough to sicken me. And perhaps that is the author's purpose. I was glad that the major online sex portion of the book turned out as it did. That actually surprised me.

For me, the book pointed out how many sick people there are in the world. I often live in a bubble and don't even realize what kinds of things are going on. This is one of those books that I am glad I read even though it was not always a pleasant experience. If you like to read about government corruption, this is the book for you. Although I know nothing about golf, I did not find that to be an issue in understanding the book.

Perfect escapism into the camaraderie of the golf course life. Unlikely plot but well developed characters. Good book for young adults.
Mr. Ross is a very good weaver of plots, sub-plots and twists that are the hallmarks of his novels. Pabby's Score is the latest work Mr. Ross has penned and it is simply a well crafted read that moves in many different directions, somehow ending in a believable conclusion. I really enjoyed the read. If you like humor, social commentary and have a vivid imagination, this book is one to consider.
